Shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a progressive treatment option used to help with chronic conditions which affect all parts of the body.
Shock wave therapy helps to stimulate the body’s natural healing factors to the painful affected area.
Radial shockwaves are high-energy acoustic waves passed on from a hand piece held against the skin and dissipated outwards into the underlying tissues.
It is used in Medicine to treat a number of muscle and tendon conditions:
- Heel pain
- Plantar fasciosis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinosis
- Achilles tendinitis
- Shin pain
- ITB friction syndrome
- Hip pain
- Elbow pain
- Shoulder pain
There are two main actions of shock wave therapy:
- Increasing blood flow to the area to enhance healing
- Depletion of substance P which is responsible for pain.
The treatment sessions are up to 10 minutes in length, you can be given up to 3000-4000 pulses during each treatment.
Many patients experience pain reduction after the initial 1-2 sessions although most people require approximately 4 sessions for pain relief.
